One Seat Left in the Playoffs, and Daytona Gets to Decide Who Takes It
Twenty-five races of accumulated evidence go into Saturday night’s regular-season finale. A superspeedway that ignores evidence entirely gets the final word.
The Coke Zero Sugar 400 closes the Cup Series regular season at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday night, and it closes it the way this race always does: with one place in the sixteen-driver playoff field still unclaimed, at the one track on the calendar where a win is available to almost anybody who is in the correct lane at the correct second.
Shane van Gisbergen holds the cutline in sixteenth, put there by two road-course victories worth 55 points apiece. Ryan Preece sits seventeenth, 31 points back and winless in twenty-five starts — a deficit made materially worse by the 25-point penalty he took after Texas in May. On stage points he is comfortably ahead of the man he is chasing, 85 to 70. On the only number that matters he is behind, and with one race left the arithmetic has collapsed into a single instruction: win.
Denny Hamlin has already banked the regular-season championship and the top seed, so the drama at the front is largely ceremonial. Everything else is at the back of the draft, where a bump at the wrong moment ends four or five playoff campaigns at once. Green flag 7:30pm Eastern.

Mercedes Will Send Its Championship Leader Backwards at Monza, Deliberately
Kimi Antonelli takes a full power-unit change at his home grand prix — a decision Toto Wolff says came out of the model, not out of the heart.
Antonelli arrives at Monza next weekend leading the drivers’ championship by 59 points after finishing second at Zandvoort, and he will start it from a grid penalty. Mercedes has exceeded its permitted component allocation — the battery failure that ended his Barcelona race is part of how — and has chosen his home race as the place to absorb the cost.
“With Kimi, we’re taking the full thing,” Wolff said. “Our calculations say that that’s the best track to take it.” He was blunter about the optics: “Obviously, algorithms don’t take their nationality into consideration. We’re here to fight for a championship and not get the most PR.” The logic is sound — Monza’s straights suit the Mercedes engine and its overtaking makes recovery plausible — which is not the same as it being popular in Italy. George Russell’s own penalty is still under discussion.
